I waited impassively for a response, but Sabrina said nothing. She pushed her lips together and I saw her thinking about my question, mulling it over in her head. After a few seconds, the only noise in the space was the far-off hum of the air conditioner in the office.I knew she wouldn't respond, and I didn't want to press the issue, not concerning matters such as this.
I exhaled softly and looked down at the ground before turning away. "It doesn't matter," I whispered, practically whispering to myself. I required a brief moment, anything to release the strain and ease the constriction I was experiencing in my chest.
I moved to the window and took out a cigarette from my pocket. Though it was against the rules to smoke in my office, I didn't care at the moment.
