Chapter 15

Regina was on the brink of exasperation. She had no idea how many skeletons Bethany still had in her closet or how much trouble she would cause. "Ms. Whitlock—" Before Regina could attempt to salvage the situation, Bethany, who had remained silent until then, spoke up, "Harper!" Bethany couldn't bear it anymore. The events of the past had ended with her marrying Trystan. Everyone had perceived her as the victor. When the first incident had happened, no one had believed her. However, she was unable to grasp why everyone blamed her for the incident during Megan's welcome dinner event. "What happened at the welcome dinner has nothing to do with me." Harper laughed. "Nothing to do with you? Who would believe that? If you could do it once, you sure as hell can do it again. You can't change your spots, Bethany." Bethany's patience snapped. She marched forward and delivered a resounding slap across Harper's face. "Did you just lay a finger on me?" Harper stared at Bethany in disbelief. "You wretch, how dare you?" Harper dropped her bag and lunged at Bethany. "Bitch, I'm not finished with you." Bethany wasn't one to back down. She was nothing like the delicate princess, Harper. Besides, being Trystan's wife for a year hadn't exactly been a bed of roses. In just a few moves, she had Harper pinned down by her hair. "Help! She's attempting murder!" Harper wailed. Bethany yanked her hair forcefully. "Shut up!" Harper's tears flowed freely from the pain, and she dared not make a sound. "Listen to me carefully. Your gang orchestrated the sabotage at the welcome dinner. If you don't believe me, ask Megan." Harper cried, "How is that possible? Don't you know Trystan well enough? If anyone dared to sabotage him, we would've had our legs broken." Bethany froze. "Beth?" Someone must have informed Megan; she had rushed over in a panic. "Release her now. There might be a misunderstanding. Let her go." Megan grabbed Bethany's hand and pulled her up. Harper reclaimed her freedom and grew arrogant once more. "Bethany, you just wait. It isn't over." Harper instantly adjusted her clothes and hurriedly fled. "Beth, I didn't know Harper would show up. I..." Megan quickly explained. Bethany looked at Megan, Harper's words echoing in her mind. Harper's clique was close-knit. If one of them had tampered with Trystan's drink, Harper couldn't have been unaware. "What happened at the welcome dinner?" Bethany interrupted. Megan looked aside. "Beth, I'll explain later." She then apologized to Regina, saying, "Ms. Katz, I'm really sorry about today. I apologize on Beth's behalf." "I didn't do anything wrong. Why should I apologize?" Bethany's stare was fierce. "Harper was the one causing trouble. If you're going to apologize, you might as well do so on behalf of your friend, Ms. Reyes." Megan was astonished for a brief moment before she caught on. "Yes, yes. These are all private matters. They shouldn't affect work or the company." Regina's brow furrowed deeper. Megan had a point. Despite being a private matter, it had already had an impact on the company. If Bethany's conduct was called into question, the company's reputation would suffer as well. "Ms. Reyes, you don't have to apologize on their behalf." Regina addressed Megan before turning to face Bethany. "Bethany, this incident started because of you. Return home and give things some thought." "Why should I?" Bethany found it challenging to accept. Regina's tone held a firm resolve. "I'm your direct superior, and the repercussions of your actions could stain the company's reputation. "You have two choices. Return home now, reflect on your actions, and await further instructions, or tender your resignation immediately through HR." Bethany was infuriated. Megan instantly grabbed Bethany and held her back. "Beth, go home first. Listen to me. I'm here. I will stand by you," Megan reassured. Bethany stared blankly at Megan. "Trust me. If you really fall out with Regina over this, there's no turning back," Megan said, leading Bethany into the elevator. "Harper is way out of line. She's always impulsive and doesn't use much of her head." Megan cursed and looked at Bethany. "Why aren't you saying anything, Beth? Are you mad at me?" "No." Bethany stared at the numbers on the elevator, which shrank one by one. She could feel the invisible hand looming behind her. "Meg, who drugged Trystan that day? And why is Harper so adamant that it was me?" Bethany's gaze stayed fixed on Megan without blinking. "Ignore Harper's comments. She's like a vicious dog who bites at anyone." "But who was it, really?" "Beth, this isn't something to be proud of. And besides, the person did it for me. I can't reveal who it was." "Can't you? What if this "person" doesn't exist?" "What do you mean by that, Beth?" Bethany looked away and began, "If Trystan had been drugged back then, I would have benefited the most. So, everyone suspects me. However..." Bethany turned to look at Megan again. "The only person who truly benefited from the incident at the welcome dinner was you, Meg." "Beth, how could you think that way about me?" Megan was on the edge of tears, feeling wrongfully accused. "No, I'm just thinking from other people's perspectives." Bethany forced a smile. "Meg, don't misunderstand me. I mean no harm. But you should also believe that I didn't do it during your birthday celebration." As the elevator doors opened, Bethany fired one final comment at Megan. "I hope you can talk to Trystan about this. Goodbye, Meg." Bethany quickly left. Megan was fuming with rage. A year ago, if it hadn't been for the fact that Bethany had no one to support her and Serene's cooperation, Megan would never have chosen Bethany. Not to mention... Megan had never imagined that this little wretch would be so stubborn and keep trying to overturn what had happened back then. She was determined not to let that happen! Meanwhile, Bethany knew she was in deep trouble this time. No employer would want an employee who consistently caused problems. Bethany didn't want to return to Jenny's apartment just yet. She roamed the streets, turning left and right, until she arrived at Lawson Group. Bethany sat down on a chair and sent a WhatsApp message to Trystan. There had been no updates since Trystan had said that he would contact her. "Mr. Lawson, could you spare five minutes? Let's go finalize the divorce." The message had been read, but Bethany received no responses. "I have already committed to not getting a divorce settlement. You have nothing to lose." The message was seen again, but there were no replies. "In public, we'll say it was your idea. But you may tell your family that I came up with the idea. Mr. Lawson, are you up to it? Give me an answer!" Again, the message went unanswered. Bethany seethed, tapping furiously on her phone as if she could punch through the screen. "Trystan, it's just common courtesy to reply to messages." Meanwhile, Trystan stood on Lawson Group's top level, his gaze darting from his phone to the tiny being far below. Oddly, he could quickly identify Bethany even from such a distance. Bethany soon received an answer. "Why are you lingering down there instead of working? Come up."
