He sprang to his feet, sidestepped Gideon and made a grab for Kira.
A gunshot rang out, deafeningly loud.
The other two guards heard it.
So did a group of men seven hundred metres away.
Austyn gestured for his men to stop, cocked his head to locate the source of the sound.
‘Southwest,’ Ryan said.
Austyn concurred. ‘Let’s pick up our pace.’
He drew his weapon as he strode forward.
Meanwhile, Kira looked at Gideon in astonishment.
He pulled the trigger, but the shot went wide and only succeeded in kicking up dust an inch in front of Martin, who stopped dead in his track.
Gideon trained his gun on Martin’s back. ‘Don’t you dare take another step forward.’
‘Don’t!’ Kira shot to her feet.
‘He tried to kill you,’ Gideon said coldly. ‘Why are you speaking up for him?’
‘I’m not.’ Kira was careful to give Martin a wide berth.
