The Recurring Dream
Kira did her best to hold back her mirth.
But in the end, she burst out laughing.
Wordlessly, Austyn pushed her back to the farmhouse.
Ryan had returned with both arms laden with grocery bags.
Kira let herself be wheeled into the bedroom, but insisted on getting herself back into bed.
Austyn looked on nervously as Kira hoisted herself up.
He didn’t breathe again until she was safely in bed.
Kira smiled. ‘Relax. I’m doing fine. You kind of remind me of myself three years ago.’
‘How so?’
‘After I gave birth to Joshua and Jennie, I was just as nervous as you are feeling right now. When Jennie took her first step, I was right next to her, both arms out, heart in mouth, worried she might fall, scared I might not catch her in time. The floor was covered by soft mats. Still, I couldn’t help but worry. Sometimes, I wished I could walk and run for them, so they would never have to stumble and fall.’
Austyn sat down on the bed next to her and held her hand. ‘You are a good mum.’
