Hearing Helen’s words, Kira felt calm instead of rage, which surprised even her.
Her biological mother accused her of being a kept woman, in a voice loud enough for everyone in the hallway to hear.
After today, nothing Helen did could ever surprise Kira again.
‘You believe everything Georgina tells you.’ Kira locked eyes with Helen. ‘You doubt every word that comes out of my mouth. Helen Raynor, sometimes I wonder if I’m really your daughter.’

Kira jerked her hand free. ‘I don’t know Austyn McCarthy. I don’t have a sugar daddy. If you don’t believe me, well’–she shrugged—‘that’s none of my business.’
Kira turned her back on Helen. ‘I’m leaving now. Please find someone else to yell at.’
Helen dropped all pretence at politeness.
