I looked up at Kevin and smiled. “Yes, from the beginning, our marriage was just a matter of convenience. So if we part ways, I can accept it calmly.”
If Alan wants to believe that the years I spent loving him were just about mutual benefit, then let him believe that. It’s almost a relief to deny those feelings, to pretend I never loved him. After all, it’s embarrassing to chase someone for so long, only to be told that there was never anything more than a business arrangement between us.
Kevin seemed to accept my explanation and nodded. “That’s probably for the best. You don’t have to go through the same heartache I did. It’s such a torment.”
Hearing Kevin’s words, my eyes sparkled with a lighthearted smile. This silly guy, even in his own pain, still worried about whether I was suffering like him.
I refilled my glass and raised it to Kevin. “To our bright futures.”
“To the generous divorce settlement I’m about to get!”
