Katrina let out a cold laugh, her eyes filled with disdain. "Don't pin such big accusations on me or Clara. We've got nothing to feel guilty about."
She turned and headed upstairs, refusing to waste another word on them.
Carlisle called after her several times, but Katrina didn't so much as pause. Watching her figure disappear at the top of the stairs, Carlisle felt an unsettling wave of panic. For the first time, he had a sinking feeling that something was slipping out of his control—a sensation he wasn't used to.
Just as he was about to follow her, Shirley stepped closer and grabbed his arm.
"Carlisle, even if Katrina doesn't like me, she can't play games with the kids' engagement and the family's reputation," Shirley said, her tone dripping with grievance.
She sighed dramatically, then added in a low voice, "I guess it's different when it's not your own kid. The favoritism is obvious. She's willing to throw everything aside for her niece."
