Chapter 8

The Somner residence was located beside Cowtail Village's main road. It was a bungalow with large yards at the front and back. The bungalow itself was five stories tall and decorated rather lavishly. A house like this was considered a mansion in the countryside. The ground before the bungalow had been paved with cement. As soon as one entered the compound, one was greeted by three large plants. They were all well taken care of and looked very much alive. On the east side of the courtyard, there was a table and chairs. It looked like a nice place to relax and have a cup of coffee. On the west side, there was a garage. Two cars, three motorbikes, and an electric scooter were parked inside. Meanwhile, there were different plants and flowers planted in the backyard. There were even two plum trees and a lemon tree. Lorraine didn't drive the pickup truck inside. Instead, she parked it outside the house. Even though the gates opened right onto the main road, there were two empty parking spaces outside the house. It made it convenient for anyone to park their car there temporarily. Logan had investigated Lorraine's background, so he knew that the Somners weren't poor despite living in the countryside. Lorraine had only been forced to take out her loan because her parents disapproved of her career path and refused to sponsor her. The Somner family had several properties in town that they rented out. Lorraine's father, Charles Somner, had started as a site supervisor. In the 1990s, he set up his construction company and led his own team. It had been 20 years now. He had earned a sum from there while Irene was a housewife through and through. The way Logan saw it, the Somners were basically nouveau riche without the bad habits. "Raine, didn't you say your husband was coming? It's getting dark outside. Why isn't he here yet? Didn't you send him our address?" Irene came out of the house when she heard Lorraine's pickup truck. Her voice preceded her person. Lorraine got out of the pickup truck, saying, "He's in the car, Mom." She helped Logan with the gifts so that he could hold the kids. They then followed her inside. The sensor lights in the courtyard lit up when Irene spoke. Those and the street lamps made it easier for her to see Logan. As soon as she laid eyes on him, she was secretly surprised by how much more handsome he looked in person. Lorraine was focused on her career and wasn't exactly gorgeous. Could she handle such a handsome husband? Logan was supposed to be a construction worker, but the demeanor he portrayed while in a suit made it clear that he didn't come from the same world as them. He looked so classy and regal. Irene couldn't help thinking he wasn't a construction worker, but Charles had asked around at the construction site near Glendale Grand Hotel. There was indeed an unmarried worker named Logan Moore who had adopted his friend's children. At least he hadn't lied about that. "Hi, Irene," Logan said. It made Irene beam. She hurried forward and said warmly, "You must be Logan. Hurry up and come on in. Oh, who are these cutie pies?" "Hi, Grandma!" Finnegan and Luna sweetly called in unison. They were adorable, and Irene immediately fell in love with them despite not being related to them in any way. She gushed over them and bent down to pick them up. Then, she urged Logan to head inside the house. As for Lorraine… Irene ignored her. Lorraine muttered, "I knew she'd forget about me once she met her precious son-in-law. Who's her actual child here?" There were many people in the house. They were the Somners' friends and family. Seeing this, Lorraine knew Irene had probably blabbed about her marriage. That was why everyone was here to see what Logan was like. She looked at him worriedly. He seemed so honest and down-to-earth. Would he freak out with so many people watching him? To her surprise, he handled the crowd with ease. It was as if he'd long since known them. The children also faced the adults head-on. They greeted everyone sweetly and received many gifts in return. It was their first meeting, after all. Naturally, Logan also received plenty of gifts. In fact, his were worth more than the kids'. "Where's mine, Mom?" Lorraine was envious when she saw this. She held out a hand to ask Irene for a gift, but Irene slapped her hand away. "You're not new here." "But I'm not single anymore. I won't make you and Dad feel like a disgrace to our ancestors. Doesn't that deserve a celebratory gift?" Before Irene could say anything, Logan passed Lorraine all his gifts. Smiling at her, he said, "I'll give you all of mine, Raine." The kids copied him, and Lorraine gaped at them. "Ignore her, Logan. Those gifts are meant for you and the kids. We see her every day, so we're already sick of her. She doesn't need any gifts." Irene said that, but she still pulled out the gift she had prepared for Lorraine. "I hope you and Logan get along well in the future. Stop hiding in your orchard." Of course, she was still pleased to see Logan willingly giving all his gifts to Lorraine, as were the rest of the family. This indicated he wouldn't hesitate to let her handle his finances. "Don't worry—till death do us part." Lorraine took Irene's gift and returned the ones Logan and the kids had given her. How could she possibly get a divorce when she had finally found a man she didn't despise and married him? Her parents would get off her back as well. If she were to divorce, they would start nagging her again, which would add to her troubles. She wouldn't do anything stupid like that. Dinner was ready, and there was enough food to feed everyone. Logan felt like the food wasn't as good as what he was used to at the Moore residence, but it was still delicious. He wasn't the only one who felt that way—the kids practically inhaled their food. The Somners' impression of Logan grew even better when they saw him and the twins making themselves right at home. After dinner, Irene dragged Lorraine into her room. Lorraine's sister, Vanessa Somner, followed them. "What now, Mom?" "You need to head home with Logan tomorrow to meet his parents, Raine. Now that you two are married, you can't continue like this without even knowing where he lives," Irene said. "That'll have to wait for a few days. I might not have time tomorrow." Vanessa said, "Logan looks somewhat familiar, Raine. I feel like I've seen him somewhere before, but I just can't recall where. He honestly doesn't look like a construction worker." "Dad already asked around at the construction site, didn't he? I swear Logan works there. He's just more handsome than the average man. That's why you guys think he looks like some big wig in his suit. "Think about it. Would he need to go on blind dates if he were a CEO or anything like that? There'd be enough women who wanted to marry him to form a line to the neighboring city." Lorraine continued confidently and somewhat narcissistically, "Fine feathers make fine birds. If I wore branded items from head to toe, I'd look like the daughter of an affluent family too." Her whole family had been working together to urge her to marry. Now that she had gotten married, they suspected she had been conned. Was there anything about her that was worthy of being conned? It couldn't be her debt, could it? Irene and Vanessa fell silent, unable to refute her.
