Chapter 42 : Match
MAXINE.
“We need to go look for it,” I stammer on, the words still spilling out of me and washing over Theo, whose expression turns darker and darker with every passing moment. “We need to leave right—"
“Calm down, Maxine,” he interjects, taking me by the shoulders and holding me at arm’s length. “Just breathe. We don’t have to leave right now. We don’t need to leave at all.”
I meet his eyes and immediately, the comfort of his gaze winds me down. I take a deep breath like he said, and immediately, I feel much lighter.
And with that comes the realization that I only have vague memories of why I’m here and why I’m asking for his help in the first place.
All I know is that I was already sleeping peacefully when things started to pierce through my consciousness. I was having a dream, I know that, but now I don’t remember what it is. Trying to hold onto it is like trying to keep a handful of sand in a windstorm. Everything is just being chipped away until the only thing I can remember
