FIVE HUNDRED YEARS AGO
The sound of the cell's metal door creaking open roused Rose from her fitful sleep. She had been in the cell for three days. She was hungry, weak, and sleep-deprived.
She was also about to go out of her mind with worry about Andrew and his friends.
Marcus hadn't come by since that first time, and the servants who brought her food didn't answer any of her questions about their whereabouts.
Three women stepped into the cell. It was the head housekeeper and two female servants flanking her.
"Get up," the housekeeper ordered.
Rose wondered what their sudden appearance meant. Were they taking her to see Andrew? Was Marcus letting her go? Whatever the case, she was leaving the cell, and that was a positive step.
She got up slowly, her limbs and joints protesting every movement. They had fed her once a day, and each time, it had been a stale piece of bread and cold stew. It was not nearly enough for an adult she-wolf, and now she felt as if her legs would give way benea
