Nova pushed the door open and saw Mark and Margaret sitting on the couch, laughing and chatting away.
Mark, who typically didn't show much warmth, looked up and smiled at her. "Hey Nova, come join us for some fruit. I've got pineapple, your old favorite."
Nova and Tristan exchanged a puzzled glance. She hadn't liked pineapple for years.
Mark wasn't really off the mark; his memories of Nova were frozen in her childhood. Since she'd grown up, he had pretty much stayed out of her life, so he was clueless about her current preferences.
Nova frowned and asked in a cool tone, "What are you doing here?"
Mark seemed a bit embarrassed. "Why can't I visit? I used to own part of this house too."
"But it's Grandma's house now," Nova retorted. "Don't come here bothering her for no reason."
Margaret, sensing the tension, quickly stepped in. "Your dad just wants to take me to the family house for a couple of days, Nova. It's really no big deal."
