CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR – NEW POLICIES
Over the next few days, the hospital buzzed with rumors and speculation. The media frenzy outside showed no signs of abating, and Laura found herself constantly fielding questions from concerned patients and their families.
"No, Mrs. Rodriguez, your care won't be affected," Laura reassured an elderly patient for what felt like the hundredth time that day. "We're still committed to providing the best possible treatment for all our patients."
As she left Mrs. Rodriguez's room, Laura nearly collided with Dr. Carter, who seemed lost in thought.
"Oh, Laura," he said, startled. "I'm sorry, I didn't see you there."
Laura studied his face, noting the dark circles under his eyes and the tightness around his mouth. "Are you okay?" she asked softly. "You look exhausted."
Dr. Carter ran a hand through his hair, a gesture Laura had come to recognize as a sign of stress. "I'm fine," he said, but his tone lacked conviction. "It's just been a challenging few days."
