CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE – A GOOD DAY’S WORK
As they made their way out, the first tremors of the explosions rumbled through the complex, sending plumes of smoke and debris billowing into the air. They moved with a renewed sense of urgency, driven by the knowledge that their window of opportunity was rapidly closing.
Bursting out into the pre-dawn gloom, they didn't slow their pace until they were several blocks away, their ragged breathing the only sound in the deserted streets.
Laura leaned against a crumbling brick wall, her heart still pounding with the rush of adrenaline. She glanced over at Logan, a wry smile tugging at her lips.
"Not bad for a day's work," she quipped, her tone laced with a mixture of exhilaration and exhaustion.
Logan chuckled, wincing as he pressed a hand to his ribs. "Speak for yourself. I think I cracked a rib back there."
Their banter was cut short by the shrill tone of Laura's communicator. She fished it out of her pocket, her expression hardening as she read the incoming message.
