“What is this I hear? You’re going on an adventure without me?” Lyra pestered me when I was leaving.
“It’s not an adventure,” I said. “It’s a stupid three-day journey to the Witches’ Forest, a two-day trip inside on foot till we get to Ariel’s hut. We stay there for Goddess knows how long, and we will come back in another five days. Hopefully.”
I looked at Avario, who simply shrugged. “It might take more than three weeks with the way things are going,” he said.
“Why are you going?” she asked me.
“Yesterday, my men told me that they had entered the Witches’ Forest. They plan to strike the rear guard of Darius.”
“Are you going to stop them?” she asked me.
“No. Even if I tried, nobody would listen to me. I want to hear from something. I need to hear from something bigger than me. Ariel was a prophet—she is a prophet. It was she who prophesied the death of my son, and I trust her enough to give me something concrete to work with.”
