No one told me we would be hearing strange noises. This one was very similar to the cry of someone—a woman sometimes, a child at other times. Often, I would come out on deck, genuinely searching for where the sound was coming from, only to turn up empty.
"Sirens," Connor would say.
At first, I would roll my eyes at him, but his face was always set in a hard line, and each time those cries came, his expression would strain even more. That’s when I felt it—the threads of magic woven around us, forming a pattern of a spell.
"They’re casting a spell," I said, looking at the thin layer between the ship and everything else.
"Sirens. If they know we’re here, they’ll eat the ship and eat us," Connor replied. "But they can’t just get on. They need us to come down. They need to be given access. I don’t understand the laws, but that’s how it works. The best way to protect us is through sound—shielding our ears."
"I can hear it just fine," I said, being the one casting the spell.
