So far, I had only two experiences with the sea. The first was with Baron a few months after we’d officially mated. It was a private moment, just the two of us on a small boat. The second, however, was when I was captured—and that couldn’t exactly be described as pleasant. This time, though, fell somewhere in between—not as beautiful as the first, but certainly better than the second. But what could I say? I was running from a civilization ruled by the Range people, one of whom was still obsessed with me, and my former mate working alongside them.
The ship creaked beneath my feet as I leaned over the railing, trying to shake off the disquiet that had been gnawing at me ever since that shark attack. The wind tugged at my hair, cool and salty, but even the fresh air couldn’t clear my mind. Maybe it was the lingering magic I felt from the Admiral himself, or maybe it was just nerves.
