Irana half expected Kane to cry. However, he was simply silent throughout the first day and then the second. Irana let out a relieved breath as she was able to finally work with the infant around her. For reasons she couldn’t quite understand, the little boy seemed to calm in the presence of books. The quiet atmosphere of the library, the rustling of pages, the soft echoes of footsteps on terracotta-tiled floors—it all seemed to lull him into a state of calm.
Irana would set him down on a blanket in a small corner of the library where she could keep an eye on him while she worked. Occasionally, he’d coo softly, his big, curious eyes following her as she moved from shelf to shelf, but for the most part, he remained quiet. To her surprise and relief, he rarely fussed, content to be in the space with her.
She smiled every time she looked over at him, watching as his tiny hands grasped at the air or toyed with the edges of the blanket. It was as if Kane had found his own peace her
