Tiffany put on her headphones and started texting Micah.
Tiffany: [We’re having departmental dinner tonight. I got off work early.]
Tiffany: [If you were here, I wouldn’t have had to go to dinner with them. I’d rather have a candlelight dinner with you.]
After waiting for a while without a response from Micah, Tiffany put away her phone and closed her eyes to rest.
In the front seat, Claudia tried hard to find a topic to chat about with Claude. Claude glanced at the resting Tiffany through the rearview mirror and said in a flat voice, “I’m driving and need to concentrate, Claudia.”
Claudia’s face stiffened.
It was as if she could hear the subtext—‘Don’t bother me, I don’t want to talk to you.’
Embarrassed, Claudia smiled and had no choice but to shut up before looking out the window.
When they arrived at the location, Claude gently knocked on the car window and said with a gentle expression, “We’ve arrived, Tiffany.”
