Chapter 76: The Pact
The room’s lights seemed to magnify every imperfection, and Mariana couldn't resist the familiar nervous habit of gnawing at her lower lip. The barely-healed scabs snagged on her teeth, sending a fresh throb of pain through her face.
As expected, gasps and murmurs rippled through the room as Mariana pulled down her mask. Whispers broke out, punctuated by a few shocked stares. Ms. Flores, however, maintained her professional composure with a practiced smile.
"Whoa there, Mariana," she boomed, her voice surprisingly gentle for its volume. "Seems like that flu's really hit you hard. Those look like some nasty cold sores!"
Mariana forced a weak smile, wincing slightly as the corners of her lips stretched. "They are a bit uncomfortable, that's for sure," she mumbled, hoping her voice didn't betray her.
