More cracks appear on the floor, filling the entire hallway with eerie sounds of breaking. More and more pieces of wood come crashing down into the inferno below, swallowed up by the flames like tiny snacks that do nothing but make the monster even hungrier.
"We can't possibly go through there," Carlos says shakily as we both stare at what's waiting below the window. "It's too high. It's way too dangerous."
"There is no way for us to cushion the fall," Claudia points out, wrapping a hand around my bicep.
I don't think she did that to warn me about anything. I look down at her and realize that her face is pale, almost blue, like the light that comes with the prophecy is somehow left inside her. She’s weak, and I can feel that in her aura, in her touch. Something is ailing her and I think it’s the prophecy. My heart breaks for her. I wrap my arm around her shoulders as a way of comfort, but I don’t think it’s doing much given the environment we are currently in.
