Viola’s heart thudded in her chest, the words “Daniel tried to rape my daughter” repeating like a broken record in her mind. She staggered backward, her hand clutched to her chest as if to physically hold in the shock.
“Daniel? My Daniel?” she whispered, her voice filled with disbelief and horror. “How could he do this? How could he be such a…such a scoundrel?”
Viola’s shock gave way to a sudden surge of pride as she connected the dots. “So that’s why Juliet came home,” she murmured, her hand falling to her side. “She didn’t want to taint our honor by following the family tradition.”
A small smile tugged at the corners of her lips, a glow of pride lighting up her eyes. “My daughter honors our tradition of women keeping their body pure before marriage,” she thought to herself. “I have raised her well.”
