She forced a smile, a counterfeit mask that did little to hide her irritation. “It sounds like someone’s just making excuses for his own failures,” she purred, her voice dripping with condescension.
But Caleb only chuckled, the sound dark and mocking. “Oh, I’ve had my share of failures,” he admitted, his grin widening.
Caleb’s grin was the spark that lit the tinder, and Susan’s temper exploded into a raging fire.
“Are you trying to make me angry?” she seethed, her voice low and dangerous. “Because if you want to play that game, I can give as good as I get.”
Caleb only shrugged, his smile broadening to the point of cruelty. “I’m just stating facts,” he drawled, the malice in his voice unmistakable.
