A hushed silence fell over the room as the two men stared each other down, tension thrumming like a taut wire about to fray. Finally, Harris spoke again, lower lip curling in a contemptuous sneer.
"I see. So all it took to undo this arrogant blowhard's legendary spine was a few nights of squeezing out an heir with his little wife. How utterly disappointing..."
That was as far as he got before Kayla surged to her own feet, leaning across the table with eyes blazing mutinous fire.
"You petulant, pathetic little man!" she hissed, every word biting and precise. "How dare you belittle and demean everything my husband and I have built, simply because we refuse to compromise our principles! Well, I've got news for you, Gregory - you're sadly mistaken if you think we'll ever kowtow to your craven demands."
Bracing her hands on the tabletop, she shoved herself upright, drawing herself up to her full stature as she jabbed an accusatory finger Harris's way.
