Gaia’s voice lowered to a soft murmur, her words meant only for Xina’s ears. It was a subtle attempt to unsettle her, but Xina had long since grown immune to Gaia’s mind games. Fear no longer controlled her the way it used to, and that in itself was a newfound freedom. She didn’t need to worry about being left out in the cold, homeless, or unsupported, because the truth had finally dawned on her—she never really had a family she could count on in the first place.

“Who’s Canan Ashdown’s boss? How old is he, anyway?” Gaia sneered with her signature smirk. “I’m betting he’s got to be some sixty-year-old man. Now you’ve got that grizzled old guy on your arm, you’d better stay away from my fiancé. I know exactly what you are, Xina. A conniving little—”
