Played like a fool
A few days later, Megan and her mother were ready to leave the country. Mr. Goldwin had sent them business class tickets to France, as well as the address to their luxurious apartment. Everything was perfect.

Megan put her last piece of cloth in her suitcase but didn’t look as glad as her mother did. The latter noticed and wondered why her daughter wasn’t jumping to the roof in happiness.
They finally had more money than they could spend in a lifetime. They didn’t need to be part of the Devins family anymore or to find a rich husband for Megan. They could live in luxury and freedom, just like they deserved.
Joyce finished her cig and threw it out of the window. She then went to sit next to her daughter :
« Why aren’t you happy, Meg ? We’ve got the money and we can start a better life in France, where all the sophisticated young men live ! What else do you need ? »
Megan bit her lower lip, her shoulders slumped.
« Can I be honest with you, mom... ? »
« Yeah, of course. »
