Ethan got up. "Ms. Langley, Evelyn and I are just business partners. Let's not say anything that might get twisted."
I wasn't sure why, but I felt disappointed when he said that. We were only business partners, after all.
Sasha seemed to pick up on the way Ethan was shutting her down without actually saying it. She smiled sheepishly. "Well, I guess I overstepped. I'll leave you to your meal."
She waved and took her friends over to another table.
Things got awkward at our table.
"Sorry, I wasn't being thoughtful enough," Ethan whispered.
"It's fine. I didn't take it personally," I said with a forced smile. "Let's eat before everything gets cold."
I speared a bite of grilled salmon and popped it in my mouth. The salmon was so tender and juicy that it practically melted in my mouth.
Still, I couldn't taste a thing. My mind was stuck on Ethan's words, but I didn't let it show.
