Each of them was so high and mighty. Mayra stood in the grand hall while everyone looked at her with mockery like they were looking at a clown. Their derisive stares felt like sharp knives, cutting her inch by inch.
Mayra accepted their scornful gazes without reacting. Her own expression remained calm and emotionless as she had always been acutely aware of her place.
She was an outsider, someone who didn't belong here.
Without a word, Mayra turned and walked away. As she left, no one said anything or tried to stop her. Once outside, a voice echoed from within the hall.
"Madeline, go check on Ms. Sadler. Even though she hasn't asked for a seat, bring her a chair to sit on. We wouldn't want anyone outside to say the Barlow family lacks hospitality and is mistreating a child."
Madeline pursed her lips slightly. "Yes, Madam Sonia."
Isabel sat quietly at the table and stole a glance at Anderson beside her. She didn't say a word and tightened the grip around her spoon.
