I leaned toward the window, watching the road. The silence in the car only caused my ears to be numb. Then I turned on the volume, as the silence had become very uncomfortable. Just as I leaned back to listen to the gritty voice from the speaker, Evans turned it down again.
“Why did you do that?” I asked.
“I should be asking you that.”
“What do you mean?”
“You just left without saying anything.”
“Well, I told you that I wanted to leave.”
“What is wrong? Did anyone say anything to offend you?”
“No one said anything; I just wasn’t feeling comfortable being around there anymore.”
