It had been quite a while since Naomi last visited her aunt's place, and as she stepped into the residential compound, everything felt unfamiliar and distant.
She walked briskly toward the building where John lived and took the elevator straight to the third floor. Her uncle and aunt did not live very high up—third floor saved a lot of time. Within seconds, the elevator gave a soft ding and stopped.
Naomi stepped out, bag in hand, and went straight to the door of their unit. She rang the doorbell, then pulled out her phone to text John and let him know she arrived.
However, before the message could be sent, the door clicked open.
She looked up—and immediately frowned.
"What happened to you? You look terrible."
Standing in the doorway, John looked disheveled. His hair was a mess, and his handsome face was pale and drawn. His eyelids were puffy, lips covered in stubble, and most of all, his eyes—red and bloodshot—were full of pain.
