CHAPTER FIVE - THE PHOTO THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Emma's key turned in the lock, her heart racing with anticipation. The apartment was silent as she stepped inside, rolling her suitcase behind her. She'd hoped to surprise Marcus with breakfast in bed, but the empty space greeted her instead.
Her eyes scanned the living room, noticing small discrepancies. Two wine glasses sat in the sink, lipstick smudged on one rim. A throw pillow lay askew on the couch, as if hastily repositioned.
"Marcus?" she called out, her voice echoing in the quiet apartment.
The front door suddenly opened, and Marcus stumbled in, his eyes widening at the sight of her.
"Emma! You're... you're home early," he stammered, running a hand through his disheveled hair.
Emma forced a smile. "Surprise! I thought I'd come home and we could have breakfast together."
Marcus's gaze darted around the room. "That's... that's great, babe. I just, uh, stepped out for coffee."
