“How’s work?” he asked, setting his wine glass down on the table and straightening the crease in the tablecloth.
She quirked an eyebrow at him. “You don’t know?”
“Know what?”
“I had to terminate my contract early,” she said, her eyes dropping to where her own hands were fiddling with the cutlery. “I was sure Natalie would have told you. She wasn’t exactly happy with me.” That was an understatement. That woman was scary. Emma’s ears still blistered from the roasting she’d gotten from Jonathon’s PA.
“I haven’t been in the office much lately,” he said, not looking at her. “Was there a problem?” He did look at her then with a curiosity she didn’t quite know what to make of.
“No,” she said slowly, shaking her head. “There was no problem, well, not with the work, anyway.”
