The nurse behind the counter brightens up as her eyes land on Noah but I can feel him retreating into a shell of some sort, trying to shut the world out. The nurse calls out to him and they exchange a few words which escape me and we are off again, walking to a wider area in the hospital passageway. Just before a closed door, Noah turns to look at me and my thoughts draw to a halt. I have always seen Noah happy, wild, joking, and carefree. Seeing him like this, so serious and stone-faced makes me nervous and off-kilter.
