“Pretty, isn’t it?” Ashley’s mother, Bridget asked and all Ashley could do was stare at the redecorated room with disdain.
She lashed out, gripping her mother’s fingers tightly. “What is this? Why are you having my room redecorated to hand out to some street urchin?”
Her mother’s blue eyes darkened. “Street urchin? She’s your cousin, and you barely even come home anymore. Your room has the nicest view and it’s spacious. It’d be great if someone else had it, rather than leave it vacant when you never even visit.”
Ashley groaned. “You don’t even know if she’s alive. You haven’t heard back from them, and you’ve gone and switched up the house for a complete stranger. You moved my things, Mom! She’s been gone for years. Given away because Aunty couldn’t care for her. Even if she’s alive, she’d already have her whole life ahead of her. Why would she even want to come here?”
