Elodie considered his question. ‘Honestly, Gabe? I guess... okay with it.’
He reached out to touch her, then stopped, realising he was still wearing the gloves. ‘Are you sure?’
Elodie met his eyes, a small smile tugging at the corner of her lips. ‘Yeah, I am. He and I were married, sure, but it wasn’t exactly Romeo and Juliet. Convenience, not romance. Honestly, I did it more for his mother than for him.’
A flicker of surprise crossed Gabriel’s face. ‘That would be…Miriam Kellan?’
‘Yes, Miriam is nice. Too nice sometimes. Always fussing over me, bringing me books and stuff.’ She smiled at the memory. ‘A bit spacey, a little forgetful, yet somehow... she reminds me of Mom. You would have liked her.’
Gabriel peeled off the gloves, the rubber crinkling in his hands.
He reached out, his warm touch settling on Elodie’s shoulder. ‘Well, I’m glad you found someone in Danning you could connect with.’
Elodie nodded. ‘Yeah, well, anyway, that’s irrelevant. The point is, Dashiell’s free to marry
