The crisp autumn air whipped through Elodie’s hair as she urged Zephyr towards the final jump. Heart pounding, she squeezed her thighs, willing the chestnut mare into a balanced canter.
Across the arena, Gabriel, atop his black stallion Valour, mirrored Elodie’s urgency.
With a deep breath, Elodie leaned forward, urging Zephyr to gather herself. In a surge of power, the horse launched into the air, her legs outstretched in a perfect bascule, clearing the jump with a grace that took Elodie’s breath away.
A short distance behind, Gabriel spurred Valour forward, who tackled the jump with a powerful takeoff and a clean landing.
They crossed the finish line neck and neck, sweat dripping from their horses’ flanks.
Elodie dismounted, a triumphant smile splitting her face. ‘That was a close one.’
Gabriel nodded. ‘You were brilliant, El. But next time, I won’t make it so easy for you.’
