‘Look, Ari—’ Elodie began.
‘I have things to tell you,’ Ari said. ‘Things you’ve probably been wondering about.’
Damn it, he knew how to read her mind.
Finally, she sighed, knowing full well that leaving things undone wasn’t exactly her style. ‘Okay, fine. Let’s grab dinner tonight.’
He flashed a triumphant grin. ‘I’ve got a place in mind.’
Her heart skipped a beat at the sight of that smile, a reminder of what drew her to him in the first place.
Appearances can be deceiving, Elodie warned herself.
When it was time to leave, she logged off her computer and checked herself in the bathroom mirror, not bothering with makeup.
Either Ari came clean about whatever secrets he harboured, or this would be their last meal together.
Ari’s taste, as usual, was impeccable.
Elodie was driven to a restaurant with no signage on a moonlit, cobbled side street.
She stepped out of the car, onto a courtyard bathed in the soft glow of fairy lights strung between ancient trees.
