“What’s wrong with Madam and Sir?”
“You’re asking me? Just make sure not to mention Gladys in front of either of them.”
“Why?”
Caleb’s tone became ambiguous. Alston wasn’t sure if Cecilia had heard this. He suddenly turned back, giving Boyce a sidelong glance.
The air grew silent.
When Alston looked back, Cecilia had stumbled and fallen to the ground. She let out a muffled groan, and in the faint light, Alston saw dark liquid seeping from her knee, staining her light-colored hospital gown.
Alston quickly stepped forward and grabbed Cecilia’s hand again. She tried to resist.
Alston tightened his grip. “Cecilia, now is not the time to break down. Don’t you want to find the kidnappers and get justice for Gladys quickly? Falling like this delays us!”
