Odessa's rogues glided across the sandy training grounds like dark shadows; a performance rather different from that of the warriors of Evelyn's former pack. While the wolves in Evelyn’s pack did fight, these wolves lashed out madly, works of advantage under aggression and cunning. There was hardly any sense of honour to their battle; it was simply a matter of survival.
"You're hesitating," Odessa's voice cut in.
As she turned, Evelyn found herself by Odessa, facing her gaze that cut straight into her heart. Odessa didn't seem impressed.
"You're never gonna be one of us," she said, "if you keep loafing about like a lost wolf. And if you're not with us, you're nothing."
Evelyn swallowed her anger. Hadn't she agreed to this? Hadn't she chosen to come here to free her mother, to protect the pack she loved? But as she stood there, amidst rogues who greeted her with watchful eyes, she began to wonder whether she had been wise to chose this path.
