It was a white lie. Yes, I did lie to her, and I had already explained myself. However, there was nothing more I could do if she still held on to it.
So, I didn't say anything further. If she was reasonable, she'd come to terms with it.
Even though Ellie was clearly distant from me, I still called Charles after leaving. It wasn't because I loved meddling, but because Ellie was someone Brandon cared about. It was the idea of loving someone and, in turn, caring for what they care about.
Besides, Ellie's intentions weren't bad; she was just angry about being deceived and was acting out of frustration.
"Maddie." Charles didn't answer the phone. Instead, his voice sounded from behind me.
I put away my phone and looked at him. I didn't need to ask why he was here. I already knew. He was here to see Ellie. If Ellie was angry at me, she'd certainly be angry at Charles, too.
"Are you here to see Ellie, or are you here because of the heart inside her?" I asked, bluntly and a bit cruelly.
