Brandon's voice was deep and overwhelming.
My playful mood subsided as I looked at his thinner face, thinking about how he had to take care of Ellie, who had just recovered. Now he must be exhausted from having to deal with me.
I instantly lost the heart to tease him, so I pulled him closer and obediently explained, "Derick and I are just friends. I have nothing to hide, and that's why I speak so freely about him in front of you."
I realized something was off with my wording as soon as I said that, but I didn't correct it.
Not mentioning Chris didn't necessarily mean I was hiding something. It could mean I no longer cared about him.

It made sense. I'd feel uncomfortable too if he were praising someone else in front of me. I might even tell him to get out of the car.
