CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY FIVE – THE LADY OF THE MANOR
Lady Griffith entered the room, her presence commanding attention. She scrutinized the preparations with a critical eye.
"Charlotte," she said sharply, pointing to a misaligned fork. "This is unacceptable. Fix it immediately."
"I'm sorry, Lady Griffith," Charlotte stammered, quickly correcting the mistake.
"Sorry isn’t good enough," Lady Griffith retorted. "I expect perfection."
"Yes, Lady Griffith," Charlotte replied, her heart sinking.
The rest of the morning was a blur of tasks and reprimands. Maud’s constant belittling and Lady Griffith’s high expectations made every moment stressful. By the time the luncheon began, Charlotte felt like a bundle of nerves.
She served the guests, her hands shaking as she poured wine and cleared plates. Lady Griffith watched her every move, ready to pounce on any error.
"Careful, Charlotte," Lady Griffith said coldly as Charlotte nearly dropped a plate. "I won’t tolerate clumsiness."
