CHAPTER THIRTEEN – AWAKE TO SORROW
She seethed inwardly, sinking onto the musty sofa and scrubbing her palms over her face wearily. At least in the hospital itself they could maintain some degree of privacy, away from the vultures circling overhead.
As evening fell, Diane and Henry emerged from the hospital into the cooling night air, mercifully overlooked by the reporters and camera crews still maintaining their vigil out front.
Diane shuddered as they passed the knot of paparazzi camped out on the sidewalk, their eyes shielded behind low-slung caps and dark sunglasses even in the fading light.
"I feel like we're the bloody criminals, trying to sneak out of here without being seen," she muttered as they hurried towards Henry's idling car, the valet hovering respectfully out of earshot.
