Grandpa’s In A Nursing Home
My voice quivered a little.
I hoped Rainey didn’t notice.
‘Before I leave Lisbern, I want to say goodbye to Grandpa.’
‘You can just call him.’
‘I tried. He didn’t pick up. And he’s not home. You must know where he is.’
‘Well, the old man’s in poor health these days,’ Rainey said after a long moment of silence. ‘He’s at Halloway Sanatorium.’
‘You put Grandpa in a nursing home?’ I shouted, incredulous.
‘It’s a sanatorium, not a home!’ Rainey snapped at me impatiently. ‘He has his own room, with round-the-clock care from a team of nurses and doctors.’
‘But why? Grandpa was perfectly fine a month ago—’
‘He’s not fine,’ Rainey cut me off. ‘If you bothered to spend more time with him, you’d have noticed he was showing early signs of dementia. He needs professional medical care.’
‘You could have told me!’
‘And what were you gonna do about it?’ Rainey sniggered. ‘Are you going to take care of your grandfather all by yourself? With what? You have no money and zero medical training.’
