Vanessa was getting choked up again.
‘I don’t know what’s wrong with me,’ she sobbed. ‘I’m sorry. I don’t even know why I’m crying.’
‘It’s okay. Let it all out.’ I stroked her back. ‘You are allowed to be vulnerable. No one’s judging you.’
I felt for her.
She must be under a tremendous amount of pressure, from work as well as her family.
The recent break-up hadn’t helped matters, either.
‘Do you want to talk to someone professional?’ I suggested. ‘I know a good psychiatrist. She helped me a great deal. I could give you her number if you want.’
Vanessa pulled back, sniffled. ‘No, thanks. I’m not depressed.’
She added after a pause, ‘Actually, I do know why I’m crying. It’s a hormonal imbalance. High levels of oestrogen and progesterone are known to be responsible for mood swings.’
My mouth gaped open. ‘Are you saying what I think you are saying?’
She nodded. ‘I’m pregnant.’
