Bad Luck All Around
Claire seemed to be lost in her own world, trapped by her convoluted logic.
She was sobbing now. ‘This is all my fault! I shouldn’t have allowed Kieran to marry you. I shouldn’t have backed down when he insisted. If not for you, Kieran would still be the president. My husband would still be alive. My family would still be together! It’s all my fault.’
‘You!’ She glared at me. ‘You are cursed. You bring bad luck to everyone around you. Your mother, your adoptive parents, and now my son! It’s all because of you!’
I blinked back tears and rose to my feet.
Claire’s words cut me to the quick, but I couldn’t fight with her.
She was being irrational.
I needed to remove myself from the situation.
Upset, wounded, I made a beeline for the front door.
‘Where are you going?’ Claire shouted. ‘Get back here! I’m not done yet!’
I slammed the door shut behind me and dashed downstairs.
I wondered aimlessly until I found a bench to sit on.
