Fighting back tears and a rising tide of panic, I said the most spineless words I had ever uttered in my life.
‘You’ve always wanted to go to the Kanary Islands. We can go now. I can get us on the next flight out. You can work on your screenplay. I’ll just sunbathe and be a tourist. We’ll take a week off, or stay as long as you like.’
My words tumbled over each other, as if I could get him to change his mind if I just talked fast enough.
