‘But what?’ I asked.
‘Why would you help me?’ Kieran asked.
I turned the car onto the driveway. ‘Why wouldn’t I?’
Unbuckling my seatbelt, I reached for his hand. ‘I love you, and I want to help you. I don’t want you to live in regret and guilt.’
It was clear that he was still feeling guilty over Sarah’s death.
Finding her alive might help to ease away a large chunk of that guilt.
Kieran leaned over, rested his head on my shoulder. ‘Thank you, honey.’
‘No thanks necessary between husband and wife,’ I said lightly.
He pulled back, smiled. ‘Sounds like something I would say.’
‘I learn from the best.’
We went into the villa holding hands.
Regardless of how I felt about Kieran’s ex-girlfriend, I thought I was doing the right thing.
I thought Kieran would want to find Sarah, to learn the truth of what happened all those years ago.
But later, much later, he confessed that he was hoping he had made a mistake, that the woman he glimpsed at the airport earlier was not Sarah.
