In the afternoon, I took Jamie to the hospital.
He burst into tears when he saw Cara in a hospital gown.
I left the room to give them some privacy, and to shed tears of my own.
By the time I went back inside, Fitz was there, and apparently had found a way to strike up a friendship with Jamie.
The boy was sitting on Fitz’s lap, playing with the stethoscope hanging around the doctor’s neck.
‘I have many more shiny toys,’ Fitz coaxed. ‘Why don’t I show you?’
Jamie looked to Cara for approval.
She nodded, but not before shooting a warning glance at Fitz, who just grinned.
He carried the boy out of the room.
I pulled over a chair, sat down in front of the bed, started paring an apple with a fruit knife. ‘How are you feeling?’
‘All in all, not bad.’ Cara was sitting up in bed, looking pale but still beautiful.
She gestured at the room. ‘I like this place. The privacy, the quiet. So different from the public hospital I worked at.’
