Before Carl abducted me, I was thinking of flying to Jevena to keep my mother company as the due date drew near.
But later, I realised that she might not welcome the visit, recalling what happened the last time I went to see her.
Landon steepled his fingertips, donning a serious look.
‘No, he’s not going to be your younger brother.’
‘What the hell are you talking about?’
‘He’s not your brother, Amiyah,’ Landon repeated. ‘Not your brother.’
‘But the ultrasound said it was going to be a boy. Did the doctors make a mistake?’
‘No, Amiyah, you don’t get it. The baby is a boy, but he is not your brother.’ He put emphasis on the second last word.
I just stared at him, uncomprehending.
‘You and he are not related.’
‘Landon, what the hell are you getting at?’
‘Take a look at this.’ He slid a sheaf of papers across the desk.
I caught the document, froze at the sight of the heading.
‘Last Will And Testament Of Brennan Finnegan.’
I had to blink several times to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating.
