Divorce Writ
I was getting uneasy.
This meeting felt like goodbye.
‘Nothing. Honey, sweetheart, baby, you know I love you. You know I do.’
His eyes were burning with an intensity that was making me nervous.
‘You’ll be safe here. Just hold on for another forty-eight hours. I promise I’ll get you out. I promise.’
He took one last, longing look at me.
‘I have to go.’
He headed for the door.
‘Kieran.’
He paused, spun around, marched back to me and crushed his lips onto mine.
The kiss was brief and hard and tasted of tears and despair.
We kissed under the blinking, watchful red eye of the security camera.
He pulled back seconds later and fled.
I was left alone in the room, staring at the empty doorway with a sinking feeling in my heart.
The warden was gone.
Two uniformed officers took me to another cell.
It was about the size of my walk-in closet back home.
I was given a new set of toothbrush, toothpaste, clothing, slippers and a towel.
I was the only occupant there.
Lunch was served to me in the cell.
